Recent data indicates that by 2020, 65% of all jobs in the US will require at least an Associate’s degree or some amount of post-secondary school training or certification. However, only 1 in 4 students are academically prepared for college when they graduate from high school, and less than half of recent graduates are workforce ready. Many students lack the skills and training necessary for securing jobs in careers with progressively higher wages and incomes. To address these challenges, Village Capital, in Partnership with Michelson Runway, has convened an elite group of ventures offering solutions to improve student academic performance and position them for success as they enter the workforce. This program held in collaboration with AT&T Aspire, and supporting partner W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Michelson Runway is a startup accelerator dedicated to supporting innovations in higher education and the workforce. The accelerator emerged as a partnership initiative between the Michelson 20MM Foundation and Runway incubator, launching with a cohort of five startups in 2016. Ultimately, the program aims to serve as the bridge that connects and catalyzes institutions, innovators, and policymakers to solve the most pressing issues in post-secondary education and workforce development.
Village Capital sources, trains, and invests in seed-stage social entrepreneurs around the world. Village Capital develops entrepreneurs solving specific problems in agriculture, energy, education, financial inclusion, and health, and then puts the power of investment in the hands of those entrepreneurs, who award investment capital to the two ventures ranked highest by their peers at the end of every program. The organization’s unique peer-selection model and curriculum received the prestigious McKinsey/Harvard Business Review M-Prize for innovation in 2013. Village Capital has supported 500 entrepreneurs across 40 programs in 9 countries in the last 5 years, creating 8,500 jobs and raising more than $118 million in follow-on capital.
