In May, 2013, Village Capital partnered with the nation’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, Points of Light, for the second Civic Accelerator. The program focused on ventures that inspire, equip and mobilize people to tackle some of the world’s biggest problems.
The program, sponsored by the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Starbucks Foundation, featured 9 early-stage ventures with scalable solutions to problems in education, sustainability, crime prevention, government transparency, and volunteer activism. Over 12 weeks, 9 for-profits and non-profits engaged in intensive peer review and coaching from leading investors, entrepreneurs, and industry experts. The workshops encouraged lean methodologies and customer acquisition, and featured sessions on HR & team-building, customer validation, rapid prototyping, financials, storytelling, legal issues, sales and marketing, a customer forum, a venture forum, and more.
